Coming off of a draw against Benfica in their opening UEFA Champions League match, Manchester United will be putting their best foot forward and looking for a win against FC Basel on Tuesday. Unfortunately for Sir Alex Ferguson, he's missing a good portion of his team due to injury. All of Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez, Fabio da Silva, Rafael da Silva, Chris Smalling, Nemanja Vidic, Chris Smalling, Darron Gibson and Tom Cleverley will all miss out, leaving Ferguson with a bit of a makeshift squad.
The good news is that United is perhaps the deepest team in the world. Though, no one has a fourth backup at right back, and midfielder Antonio Valencia will probably play in that spot. Ferguson normally uses Park Ji-Sung in Champions League, but with United needing a win and Basel missing their best winger, Xherdan Shaqiri, Ferguson could opt to play both Nani and Ashley Young.
United has incredible depth up top and could opt to start any number of players, but Dimitar Berbatov and Danny Welbeck should make a good partnership in theory and feel like the most likely players to play against Basel. The center of midfield has a similar problem and number of solutions with injuries and available players. Michael Carrick is said to be fit and did not play on the weekend, so he's probably a good bet to start.
Meanwhile, Basel are missing both Shaqiri and Benjamin Huggel through suspension. They have plenty of depth in defense and up top, but are lacking in midfield depth. The versatile Radoslav Kovac will likely step into a holding midfield role, while 18-year-old starlet will continue to fill in on the wing for Shaqiri, instead of playing his normal central midfield position.
