Gary Cahill Transfer: Chelsea FC Finalizes Signing Of Bolton Defender

Chelsea and Bolton Wanderers agreed to a fee for Gary Cahill some time ago, with Cahill and Chelsea beginning contract negotiations on January 1, but the two sides hit a few speed bumps over wages. All of the issues between the parties have finally been ironed out, and Cahill was introduced as a Chelsea player on Monday.

With Alex on his way out, John Terry possibly facing a future suspension and the team needing a bit of defensive depth anyway, Cahill will likely have plenty of opportunities to play at Stamford Bridge. He will reportedly be making around £80,000 per week and will occupy one of the English homegrown spots on Chelsea's Premier League roster and Champions League roster.

Said Cahill, about his move:

'Chelsea is a massive club, it is a club that looks to win trophies season in season out and it is a big opportunity for me to be a part of that. Opportunities like this you can't turn down.'

Cahill's form for Bolton hasn't been quite as good this season as it was last season, but that's partially the product of the lack of talent that was around him. With Petr Cech behind him and Michael Essien in front of him, he'll probably look a whole lot better.

Gary Cahill Transfer: Personal Terms Not Yet Agreed, Conflicting Reports Emerge

Chelsea have already agreed to purchase England international central defender Gary Cahill from Bolton Wanderers for £7 million, but Cahill has not yet signed on the dotted line. Between Chelsea's deep pockets and Cahill's current low wages as compared to most of the Chelsea squad, it's expected that Cahill and Chelsea will agree to terms, but it's not yet a foregone conclusion. Owen Coyle and Andre Villas-Boas seem to have different views on the matter, according to some somewhat conflicting reports.

Here's Villas-Boas, on the status of negotiations.

"We're still miles apart regarding agreement with the player...We'll continue to monitor this situation as we continue to monitor others."

Sounds ominous, no? Well, not to Owen Coyle. From what he had to say, AVB's words were probably not given the proper context.

"He's obviously heard from the one meeting. They've only had one meeting with Gary's representative and then, with the games coming up, I had to make sure Gary was focused. Gary hasn't spoken to Chelsea yet...It's like anything else, if I got into a meeting with you, we're not going to shake hands after two seconds and agree, you're going to be apart, that's how negotiations work."

Cahill's agent, knowing that Chelsea is not a cash-strapped club, is understandably starting negotiations with a relatively high number. More likely than not, the two sides will work it out and Cahill will sign for Chelsea shortly. For now, he remains a member of Bolton Wanderers and will probably continue to play for them until he signs for Chelsea.
