The Portland Timbers signed defender Hanyer Mosquera on Tuesday, continuing to rebuild a defense that allowed the fifth most goals in MLS last season. The 24-year-old is already a season professional, having played the last six seasons in Colombia. Most recently, he was a starter for La Equidad and helped lead them to the finals of the Apertura.
"Hanyer is a player we’ve had our eye on for 18 months," Timbers GM Gavin Wilkinson said in a team release. "He has all the attributes needed to become one of the top defenders in MLS."
Mosquera started 34 games in 2011, scored a pair of goals and contributed to 10 shutouts. During the Apertura campaign, he made 22 starts, including six playoff matches.
After making his pro debut at age 19, he has spent the last four seasons in Colombia's first division. Prior to joining Equidad, he played for Deportes Quindio.
