San Jose Earthquakes Sign Jon Busch To New Contract

Stay connected with SB Nation

The San Jose Earthquakes have stability in goal with Jon Busch and have now made sure that they will continue to have that stability by signing Busch to a new contract. Arguably the only man on the Quakes roster who performed well night in, night out in the last two years, Busch will stay in San Jose and continue to bail out a bad, but improving, defense. Terms of the new contract were not released.

The 35-year-old Busch joined the Earthquakes before last season and helped them to the playoffs and then the conference final with a year that some felt was Goalkeeper of the Year worthy. It wasn't the first year that he has a brilliant year either as he captured Goalkeeper of the Year honors in 2008 with the Chicago Fire.

Re-signing Busch was crucial for the Quakes, who lean very heavily on their goalkeeper. Busch made the most saves in MLS last year and while Victor Bernardez will definitely help their defense, no one is expecting San Jose to be the most stingy of defenses. That means that Busch will be busy again and will have to continue his fine career if the Quakes are to return to the playoffs in 2012 after a one-year absence.
