Sunderland Hopeful Of Kevin Davies Swoop

Stay connected with SB Nation

Sunderland remain in the hunt for Bolton Wanderers striker Kevin Davies, despite having been rebuffed by the Trotters after opening the bidding with a £1M initial offer. With Nicklas Bendtner unavailable due to facial injury and Asamoah Gyan on loan at the UAE, Sunderland find themselves rather low on established Premier League forwards and would be willing to pick up the 34-year-old on a relatively short term deal.

Bolton, meanwhile, are battling against relegation and would be in even deeper trouble should they sell Davies, who despite a relatively poor showing in terms of goals scored this season remains one of Owen Coyle's more reliable performers. The two sides were described as being a ways apart by Black Cats boss Martin O'Neill, who wants Davies to act as a mentor to 18-year-old centre forward Connor Wickham, but he remains confident that there's a good chance that Davies ends up at the Stadium of Light before the transfer window closes.
