Just in case Andrew Wegner's 2012 MLS SuperDraft resume needed one more element, he received it on Friday when he was named the Hermann Trophy winner. The Hermann is essentially college soccer's version of the Heisman and it goes to the nation's best player. Wegner beat out North Carolina's Billy Schuler and Creighton's Nathan Finlay to win the award during a seaosn in which he played out of position.
After starting his Duke career as a center back, Wegner was asked to move to forward during his junior season due to some injuries at the position. Wegner responded by scoring 17 goals and registering eight assists, while also being named the ACC's Offensive Player of the Year.
Wegner is expected to go within the Top 3 picks, but most expect him to move back to center back at the MLS level. Wegner is currently with the United States U-23 team, rather than at the MLS Combine.
