Borussia Dortmund vs. Real Madrid: Robert Lewandowski puts BVB 1-0 up

Stay connected with SB Nation

It's the home side who have taken the lead in Dortmund, with Robert Lewandowski getting himself on the scoresheet to put his team into the lead.

Real Madrid had appeared to get off to a confident start, but began to defend poorly, and it was their back four that let them down for the goal. Pepe's sloppy pass was smartly intercepted by Sebastian Kehl, and with Pepe and Raphael Varane having drifted miles apart, the Dortmund captain calmly passed to Lewandowski, allowing the Polish striker to simply collect the ball in the central channel before finishing smartly inside Iker Casillas' near post.

It's been a scrappy affair, with neither side covering themselves in glory defensively - shortly before, Neven Subotic almost gifted Real Madrid an opening, before immediately playing Lewandowski through who was very unfortunate to be judged to have fouled Raphael Varane as he bore down on goal. With defending like this, there are goals in this one.
