Harry Redknapp confirmed as new Queens Park Rangers boss

As expected, Tony Fernandes has replaced Mark Hughes with Harry Redknapp at Loftus Road.

In a move that could have (and probably should have) been made well over a month ago, Queens Park Rangers have brought in Harry Redknapp to replace recently sacked manager Mark Hughes. Redknapp has been without a job since he was let go by Tottenham Hotspur over the summer, and has a history of taking underachieving teams out of the relegation race and into a safe position in the table.

Redknapp spoke to QPR's official website, and he sounds sufficiently excited to take over the post.

"When I spoke to the Shareholders and they told me about their plans I knew this was too good an opportunity to turn down. There's no doubt there's a lot of ability in the squad, but for one reason or another things haven't gone as well as everyone expected since the start of the season. I can't wait to get to work and get the results necessary to kick-start our season."

Following Tottenham Hotspur's brilliant start to last season, Redknapp was widely believed to be Fabio Capello's successor, but the FA decided to appoint Roy Hodgson as England boss. Tottenham Hotspur were apparently hoping for Redknapp to take the England job as much as he was hoping to be offered it, and sacked him despite a fourth-place finish after a late season collapse.

QPR brought in enough talent over the summer that there's little excuse for them to have no wins at this point in the season. While Redknapp might not have been a good fit for England or for a Tottenham team that have different ambitions than when they first hired him, he's certainly a good fit for a relegation-threatened team that's too talented to be in the drop zone.
