Schalke failed to pick up any ground in their title hunt as they fell in Hamburg.
Nobody told Hamburg that they wouldn't have much of a shot against Schalke with Heung-Min Son and Rafael Van der Vaart out injured. The Red Shorts came away with an impressive 3-1 victory.
After a first half with no goals scored, Maximilian Beister put the home side out in front in the 52nd minute. He ripped a shot from outside the area that caught Lars Unnerstall unawares. The German youth international was involved in Hamburg's second goal in the 65th minute. He backheeled the ball to Dennis Diekmeier. He crossed the ball into Artjoms Rudnevs who put his shot past Unnerstall for the 2-0 lead.
Hamburg's Tomas Rincon was called for a handball in the area. Klaas Jan Huntelaar stepped up to take the penalty, and it was saved by Rene Adler. Huntelaar was quick to act, however, and put the rebound in to make it 2-1.
Schalke threw men forward looking for the equalizer, but they were caught out on the break. Tranquillo Barnetta fouled Dennis Aogo in the area for a penalty, and Milan Badelj converted to make it 3-1.
