Bayern Munich held on to beat Augsburg 1-0 in a third round Bavarian Derby match. Augsburg came out strong and managed to test Manuel Neuer consistently throughout the match. Ja-Cheol Koo ripped a shot that was deflected by Dante, and Neuer barely got his hand to it to deflect it off the post.
Mario Gomez grabbed the first goal in the 26th minute with a typical Mario Gomez goal. Franck Ribery had his way Ronny Philip on the left side before crossing into Gomez who poked it past Alexander Manninger for the 1-0 lead.
Bayern thought they made it 2-0 just before halftime when Anatoliy Tymoshchuk ripped a shot from 30 yards out that struck the crossbar before bouncing down and out. Bastian Schweinsteiger followed the rebound with a bicycle kick that struck the crossbar before being cleared. The replay showed that Tymoshchuk's shot landed behind the line and should've been a goal.
Sparks started to fly at the start of the second half. The referee showed Franck Ribery a straight red card for pushing the face of Koo. Replays showed that Koo slapped Ribery's face before the Frenchman returned the favor. Koo was only shown a yellow. Minute's later, replays showed that Augsburg should've been awarded a penalty when Dante handled the ball in the area, but it went uncalled.
As Augsburg continued to push for an equalizer, it was Bayern that grabbed the next goal. Substitutes Thomas Müller and Xherdan Shaqiri combined to make it 2-0 and put the match away.
