Barcelona held a press conference discussing the medical situation surrounding head coach Tito Vilanova. The 44-year-old has suffered a cancer relapse and will be having surgery on Thursday. Club president Sandro Rosell spoke at the press conference saying his head coach is strong and that the club is convinced he'll be back soon.
Team captains Carles Puyol, Xavi and Victor Valdés were in attendance as Rosell spoke about how this will effect the team on the field.
"We have complete confidence in the team. The Club is very strong and very united, we're capable of overcoming adversity."
Rosell also thanked fans and other clubs for their support on behalf of the team and Vilanova.
The club's medical services staff released this explanation of the situation:
"An extension of the pathology has been detected in [Vilanova's] parotid gland. The manager requires surgery which he will undergo this Thursday. He is expected to remain in hospital for three to four days."
Vilanova will have to undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatment for approximately six weeks following the surgery. Depending on how well the surgery and treatment goes, Vilanova may be able to continue his work with the club during his recovery.
Jordi Roura, Barcelona's assistant manager, will train and manage the first team while Vilanova undergoes treatment.
