Augsburg have announced the signing of Michael Parkhurst from Danish side Nordsjaelland on a free transfer. The contract is through June 30, 2015 and will be in effect even if Augsburg are relegated to the 2.Bundesliga.
Sporting director Jürgen Rollman spoke on the transfer:
"Michael Parkhurst is an experienced defender who played primarily at right-back for Nordsjaelland. It's well known that we've had problems in that position. However, Parkhurst can also play on the left or in the center of defense and we're sure he'll help our team."
Parkhurst, 28, was a regular starter on the Nordsjaelland side that won their first ever trophies. They qualified for this season's Champions League on their way to winning the 2010-11 Danish Superliga. Parkhurst started all six matches in the Champions League. He also has the eye of Jurgen Klinsmann as Parkhurst made an appearance in a World Cup Qualifier this fall for the USA. The defender joined Nordsjaelland from Major League Soccer's New England Revolution where he appeared in three straight MLS Cup Finals and won a US Open Cup.
Parkhurst is prepared for the challenge that will be the second half of Augsburg's season:
"I'm looking forward to playing at FC Augsburg and in the Bundesliga. I'd like to do my bit so that we can achieve our aim of staying up in the second half of the season. I watched the game against Bayern Munich at the SGL arena and despite the defeat I was impressed with the fantastic atmosphere. That's why I can hardly wait to get out there and play myself."
