Malaga vs. FC Porto, 2013 UEFA Champions League draw: A chance for two good teams to go far

Dean Mouhtaropoulos

Malaga are one of the lesser teams in the competition, but they'll have every chance of getting something against FC Porto.

Malaga and Porto will probably be quite glad to have drawn each other in the Champions League, as it gives both clubs a decent chance of making a real impact on the competition.

Neither side is likely to go all the way and win it, but both are well-organised teams which can be highly dangerous, particularly Porto, and particularly at the Estadio do Dragao. That will likely give the Portuguese the edge, but this is a well-matched encounter and either team could win.

Another factor here is likely to be the chance for some players who will almost certainly be playing for bigger clubs in the coming years to show off their talent, with James Rodriguez, Joao Moutinho, and Isco all set to feature. For now though, this is an intriguing match-up between two good teams.

Key Player

Jackson Martinez - The Colombian has been absolutely lethal for Porto since signing for the club, and they will be hoping that he can replicate his stunning form on the continental stage. Even in Porto's star-studded team, he represents the clear dangerman for Malaga.

Matchup to watch

Ignacio Camacho vs. Joao Moutinho - Malaga are a bit light on midfield solidity, and despite their discipline, they could struggle to prevent the likes of Moutinho from running the show. Camacho will be key to making sure the Spanish side don't get overrun.

Porto, thanks to their home form. The Portuguese club probably edge out Malaga in terms of quality, and their home record and experience will count heavily in their favour. Added to the fact that they're storming their domestic league and they'll be able to rest players, they should be clear favourites to progress.
