The match between Siena and Napoli dragged on for the first 85 minutes, before Napoli burst to life in the 85th minute, scoring two goals to end their horrible week on a high. For Siena, though, spirits are sinking even lower, as the robur remain dead last.
Nothing happened until the 50th minute, when Napoli had two shots. Gianluca Pegalo performed an excellent save to push away a sharp shot by Marek Hamsik. The resulting corner gave Edinson Cavani the opportunity to get his head on the ball, but Pegalo was there again to rescue.
Then the next 35 minutes passed in a rather dream-like haze, in which clocks ran backward and flowers closed back into buds. Pegalo curled up in a ball and took a little nap. Morgan De Sanctis tucked and re-tucked his kit into his hideous red shorts. Small children wondered if Christmas would ever come.
And then Santa delivered the most wonderful present to Napoli supporters: a Christian Maggio goal. Hamsik was the provider, superbly controlling the ball, chesting down, turning to send the ball across the face of goal. All Maggio needed to do was put a toe on it.
But turns out Santa must be a Napoli fan, because he decided to top up their stockings with some extra Christmas cheer. Felipe performed a full-on body check on Goran Pandev (perhaps he's a cranky NHL fan?), bringing the Macedonian down inside the area. Cavani stepped up to take the penalty, Pegalo dove early, and Napoli had their 2-0 win.
