Newcastle United vs. Wigan Athletic: Magpies need a quick turnaround

Matthew Lewis

It's been a disappointing year so far for Newcastle. Can they turn things around against Wigan on Monday?

A wave of injuries has crashed over both Newcastle Untied and Wigan Athletic, both of whom will have to play makeshift squads when they meet in an important clash on Monday night. Newcastle are performing below expectations this season, while Wigan are playing at or slightly above their talent level at the moment. They're currently safe from the bottom three, but only by two points apiece.

Newcastle have been incredibly disappointing in two recent away losses, but are a stronger team at home and will expect a win over Wigan, even with their squad as depleted as it is. Wigan have only one win in their last four, but losses to West Bromwich Albion, Liverpool and Manchester City are hardly embarrassing.

Newcastle injuries and suspensions

Out: James Perch (suspended), Yohan Cabaye (groin), Shola Ameobi (groin), Steven Taylor (hamstring), Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring), Gabriel Obertan (toe).

Wigan injuries and suspensions

Out: Shawn Maloney (groin), Ivan Ramis (hamstring), Ben Watson (leg), Albert Crusat (knee), Antonin Alcaraz (groin). In doubt: David Jones (calf), Gary Caldwell (hamstring), James McArthur (thigh)

These are, by far, the two worst injury lists in the Premier League. Jones, Caldwell and McArthur all face late fitness tests for the Latics and could potentially feature.

Match date/time: Monday, 8 p.m. local, 3 p.m. ET

Venue: St. James' Park, Newcastle, England

TV: Sky Sports 1 (U.K.), ESPN2 (U.S. - English), ESPN Deportes (U.S. - Spanish), TSN (Canada)

Online: ESPN3 (U.S.)
