Juventus defeated Shakhtar Donetsk to go through as the top team in Group E. By virtue of their tiebreaker over Chelsea, Shakhtar still qualify for the knockout round.
Juventus, who looked to be in serious danger of not progressing in Champions League when the day started, is going through to the knockout stage after finishing first in Group E. They brought their best to the Ukraine on Wednesday and impressed in a 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk.
The first half was mostly uneventful, with neither team generating more than a few half-chances. Sebastian Giovinco had the best opportunity for either team in the 29th minute, when Mirko Vucinic played him through on goal with a great ball into his feet at the top of the box. He had an uncontested shot, but pulled it wide.
Shakhtar started the second half looking lively, and had a great chance through Yaroslav Rakitskiy. He fooled Gianluigi Buffon with a swerving free kick in the 49th minute, that the Juventus keeper barely recovered to make a save on. Both sides had their chances as the momentum swung back and forth until the 56th minute, when Juventus went ahead for good.
Stefan Liechtsteiner played in the ball that led to the goal, towards Giovinco, though the Juventus forward wasn't the one to touched it in. In an attempt to clear, Oleksandr Kucher poked the ball into his own net. It was a bad break for Shakhtar, considering how well they played up until that point, and that Liechtsteiner appeared to be a hair offside.
Coming into the day, Shakhtar held a tiebreaker over Chelsea, and progress despite their loss and Chelsea's 6-1 win.
