Manchester United centre back Chris Smalling has been stretchered off at Wembley Stadium after a clash of heads with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar during England's friendly against the Netherlands. The 22-year-old was attempting to defend a cross early in the second half, going up for Dirk Kuyt's delivery, but Huntelaar beat him to the ball, nodding past Joe Hart for the second Dutch goal - and then following through straight into the side of Smalling's head.
Smalling appeared to be knocked out while still in midair, and he landed very awkwardly, staying on the ground for several minutes while trainers came on to treat him. He was awake and alert when the stretcher came on, but it seems likely that he'll have to miss at least one match after that - it was a really really ugly looking collision and one that's probably caused a concussion. Club teammate Phil Jones has replaced the young defender.
Huntelaar didn't get off particularly easy either. The Schalke striker appears to have broken his nose - he too is forced off in place of Luuk de Jong.
