Of the top seven clubs in Serie A, only Roma was able to take all three points from Round 22.
Who knew that a few hydrogen and oxygen molecules, bonded together and pushed past the point of freezing, could wreak so much havoc? Five matches were postponed from the midweek round, while Cesena - Catania has been called off this week. Roma - Inter was originally scheduled for Saturday evening, but will be played at 15:00 on Sunday, with Milan - Napoli moving to the same time, up from the late kickoff.
Poor Catania, though. Their midweek match against Genoa was postponed, their clash with Cesena has been postponed, and they still need to play 25 minutes of their rained-off match against Roma. It might have been Max Allegri protesting about fixture congestion this week, but it seems Vincenzo Montella will have more to complain about.
Round 22, 2012 Serie A: Top Five Clubs All Drop Points
Due to the weather, nearly all this weekend's Serie A matches were held on Sunday afternoon, making it nearly impossible to cover anything live. Here's a quick recap of how the day shook out.
Genoa 3-2 Lazio
The first match of Serie A Sunday saw Genoa continuing their climb up the table, although in true grifone fashion, the hosts did their best to give Lazio a chance. After another wonder goal from Rodrigo Palacio, Bosko Jankovic scored a brace to give Genoa the 3-0 lead early in the second half. Lazio lost Hernanes in the warm-up and Tommaso Rocchi to injury with not even 20 minutes gone. Cristian Ledesma converted a penalty to give the visitors a bit of hope, but couldn't find their second until Alvaro González scored in the 90th.
Chievo Verona 1-2 Parma
The Flying Donkeys handed Parma all three points today with an own goal by Luciano. Sebastian Giovinco (of course) scored first for Parma, but Chievo answered less than five minutes later, Cyril Thereau putting in the equalizer.
Fiorentina 3-2 Udinese
High winds in Florence made this match interesting, and Udinese just couldn't figure out how to best adjust their play in time to get even a point. Antonio Di Natale opened the scoring, but double penalty conversions by Stevan Jovetic, bracketed by a header by Mattia Cassani, gave Fiorentina the win. A consolation goal by Gabriel Torje in the 90th minute couldn't lift the bianconeri spirits, as three points could have helped them close the gap on Juventus up top.
Juventus 0-0 Siena
Speaking of Juve, they were held to a draw by Siena in Turin. The visitors did very little in the way of attack, preferring to stay above the relegation zone by adding just a point to their total. Gianluca Pegolo had a great day in goal for Siena, but that's about all that can be said about this one, as the Old Lady stay top.
Lecce 0-0 Bologna
Ok, Lecce, you're going to need more than a point to climb above the relegation spots. Next!
AC Milan 0-0 Napoli
Oh wait, this match was almost as boring. Aurelio De Laurentiis can't complain, though, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic was rightly sent off for reaching around his teammate and slapping Salvatore Aronica. The hosts went down to ten men, but the struggling Napoli still couldn't score. Still, a point's a point against Milan at the San Siro.
Novara 0-0 Cagliari
This match happened.
Palermo 2-1 Atalanta
Andrea Consigli tripped Palermo captain Fabrizio Miccoli, earning himself a sending off with less than thirty minutes played. The striker converted the penalty, but substitute goalkeeper Giorgio Frezzolini was impressive in net, denying Miccoli more chances, but Igor Budan knocked in the second for the rosanero. Shortly after, Maxi Moralez scored for Atalanta, but there was nothing much the visitors could do but contain the damage.
AS Roma 4-0 Inter Milan
Roma absolutely stunned Inter, knocking four past a nerazzurri side whose attempts to hit the home team on the break just never managed to work out. Juan opened the scoring in the 12th minute, but it was Fabio Borini who was the star of the show, with the youngster scoring in both halves. Borini sprung the offside trap both times, making the Inter defense look like total amateurs. Just to make the humiliation complete, Bojan scored a 4th near the end of regular time, taking the ball through three defenders before slotting it past Julio Cesar.
