Wigan Vs. West Bromwich Albion, 2012 Premier League: Latics Miss Chance To Get Off Bottom

Because of the poor play of the teams around them, Wigan Athletic had a chance to get off the bottom place in the Premier League and out of the drop zone with a victory against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday. They had plenty of opportunities to do so, but have been forced to settle for a 1-1 draw.

It was a performance that was a fantastic reflection of Wigan's entire season. They were the slightly better side and had plenty of chances to score, while WBA struggled to create. The Baggies scored on their only shot on target in the game, while Wigan hit the woodwork three times.

Wigan scored the opener in the 54th minute, through a close-range toe-poke by James McArthur at the end of a scramble. It only took them 10 minutes to throw that lead away. Former Latic Paul Scharner was the man who stole two points away from Wigan, heading in a corner kick from Chris Brunt. The defending on the corner was truly abysmal, as Scharner was allowed an open header on a low ball from less than six yards out.

Incredibly, Wigan are just one point from safety. Blackburn -- a very bad team -- are three points clear of the drop. This truly is a five-way relegation race in which all of the five teams at the bottom could stay up or go down.
