Copa Libertadores 2012, Wednesday Wrap: Chivas, Flamengo In Trouble After Losses

Two of the biggest sides in Copa Libertadores are on the outside looking into the knockout stages with two games to go, following their losses on Wednesday night. Chivas Guadalajara and Flamengo might need to win both of their remaining games to get through, and they will both need at least four points from their last two if they want to get through. Wednesday's other game was a huge one in Group 3, where Universidad Catolica got themselves back into the competition.

Olimpa 3-2 Flamengo

In what might have been the best match of the tournament so far, Olimpa claimed second place in Group 2, sending Flamengo down to third. Olimpo got off to an absolutely brilliant start, scoring the only goal of the first half in the 6th minute with a corner kick, delivered by Pablo Zeballos and finished by Sergio Orteman with a low shot from six yards. Flamengo equalized early in the first half in stunning fashion, with Ronaldinho setting up Vagner Love's first-time strike with a world class through ball.

Just three minutes later, Olimpo took the lead back in bizarre fashion. Their move started with a big deflection that carried the ball into the penalty area. Zeballos got on the end of it and hit a low shot, which Felipe saved. He got onto the rebound and hit a much better, completely unsaveable shot into the roof of the goal to restore his team's advantage. In the 70th minute, Eduardo Aranda would score what was eventually the game-winner with a fantastic 25-yard shot into the lower corner at the far post.

Dario Bottinelli pulled one back in the 77th minute for Flamengo with an audacious 30-yard goal, setting up a dramatic finish, but Flamengo were unable to find a third.

Defensor Sporting 1-0 Chivas Guadalajara

This game was the opposite of Olimpa-Flamengo. Without Cubo Torres, Marco Fabian, Jorge Enriquez and Miguel Ponce, Chivas were bad. They played for the draw from the start and Julio Nava was sent off in the 39th minute. Then they played even more conservatively. When Andres Olivera finally netted in the 70th minute on a goalmouth scramble, the game was over.

Universidad Catolica 2-1 Union Española

This one didn't have quite the spectacular skill and lack of defense that Olimpa-Flamengo had, but it was just as exciting and just as big for the competition. UC needed a win desperately to keep their hopes alive in Group 3, and they've blown it wide open by doing just that.

UC struck in the 7th minute through Roberto Olivar, who scored on a fantastic diving header. Things were a bit quiet from then until the final 15 minutes, when things went crazy. In the 78th minute, Catolica's Matias Campos was shown a red card. Union Española capitalized on their man advantage seven minutes later, when Gonzalo Villagra headed in a cross by Leonel Mena. UC's Copa appeared to be all but over at the time.

Incredibly, they fought back with 10 men. Just two minutes later, substitute striker Daud Gazale headed in a corner kick to give his team the victory and the Estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo went bonkers. With two games remaining, UC are on six points, while Union Española and Bolivar sit on seven.
