Chelsea Vs. Barcelona, 2012 UEFA Champions League: Gary Cahill Stepping Up

Stay connected with SB Nation

Since making his move to Stamford Bridge from Bolton Wanderers, Gary Cahill's Chelsea career has been hit or miss. He's had a couple of poor performances and a couple of truly brilliant ones. When David Luiz picked up an injury over the weekend, it became apparent that Cahill would be called into action. He had some scary moments in the first half against Barcelona, but he's stepping up big in the second half.

In a matter of one minute, he shut down two great goal-scoring opportunities for Barca. The sequence started with a great dribbling move through the middle by Lionel Messi, who had his shot well blocked by Cahill. The visitors recovered and got the ball back into the box for Alexis Sanchez, but Cahill made a brilliant last-ditch tackle to prevent him from ever getting off a shot.
