Arsenal Vs. Chelsea, 2012 Premier League: Blues Need Three Points

Chelsea are on a high after defeating Barcelona in Champions League action on Wednesday, but they don't have the luxury of sitting around and enjoying the victory. No, they have to come right back on Saturday and take on Arsenal. Before their loss to Wigan on Monday, the Gunners were in fine form too, so this is not the Arsenal team that looked more like a mid-table team earlier in the season. This is very much the third-place team they are right now.

Making matters worse for Chelsea is that they need a win. There's no way around it and if they don't get a win then they might as well kiss the Champions League goodbye for next season. Asking for a win at the Emirates is a tall task and normally a draw would be a perfectly fine result, but this isn't a normal situation. As We Ain't Got No History's Stephen Schmidt notes, this is a must win for the Blues.

A loss would be devastating. If that were to occur, we'd drop 10 points behind third, and potentially 5 behind 4th. With only four games left to play in the Premier League schedule that would likely be the end of our domestic Champions League chase. All our focus at that point would be on winning the FA Cup and Champions League. A draw would leave us in similar bad shape, but it would at least leave us some hope of a Tottenham or Newcastle slip that would allow us to catch them. It would still be an awfully poor result though.

And there is the problem. The Blues need a win and nothing else, which is hardly the ideal situation, but obviously this is not an ideal situation. Chelsea have been backed into a corner and only three points can get them out of it.
