Barcelona Vs. Real Madrid, 2012 El Clasico: Benzema Wastes Chance To Make It 3-1

Stay connected with SB Nation

Real Madrid will be pretty happy with their 2-1 lead but it could easily have been 3-1 if not for some really shoddy play from Karim Benzema. The hosts press forward, which leaves plenty of gaps in their back line, and Madrid pounce, with Fabio Coentrao launching a four on three counterattack. Eventually the ball finds Benzema, who has two legitimate options with Mesut Ozil to his right and Cristiano Ronaldo to his left. He opts to go with neither and blasts straight at Victor Valdes from the edge of the box. That was pretty silly.

Speaking of silly, Javier Mascherano's just decided to go for glory from about forty yards. Guess how that went? Barcelona are clearly pretty desperate now - we don't often see their centre backs taking pot-shots from absurd range. Five minutes left, and as it stands the title race is essentially over.
