Own-goals are, almost by definition, rarely highlight worthy. They usually involve an unfortunate deflection in which the ball strikes a hapless defender in a perfectly understandably mistaken way.
Every now and then, though, they are rather glorious in their awesomeness. Too hyperbolic? In the case of Chance Myers' own-goal from Sporting Kansas City's loss to the Portland Timbers on Saturday, I don't think so.
Let's go to the film:
Kris Boyd's cross is not entirely awful, I suppose. Sure, it's mainly harmless, but it could have conceivably found the foot of one of his teammates if it had gone unplayed by the Sporting defenders.
But it was a surely harmless cross. So harmless, in fact, that the two players with the best shot at it were both defenders. If either Myers or teammate Julio Cesar is allowed to play it without interference, it becomes just another anonymous pass.
Of course, that's not what happened. Both Myers and Cesar attempt to play it. Perhaps thrown off by Cesar's out-stretched boot, Myers turns that harmless cross into a glorious diving header.
In a season that has so far gone almost perfectly for Sporting up until that point, it was a shocking turn of events. That's also what makes it just a little more amusing.
