Chivas Vs. America, 2012 Super Clasico: The Curtain Could Come Down On The Goats

Stay connected with SB Nation

The Super Clasico always carries weight for Chivas. It is the biggest rivalry in Mexico and it is circled on the calendar every time the fixture list comes out, but this year, it carries extra weight for the Goats. If they don't win, they might as well kiss their season goodbye.

Chivas will enter Estadio Omnilife today five points behind Chiapas for the final spot in the Liguilla. With just the Super Clasico and three other matches remaining, time is running out on the Goats. They cannot afford to be five points back at the end of the day, especially because Cruz Azul and Toluca are in between them and Chiapas so it is not as easy as just catching one club. They have some major work to do.

That Chivas is even in position to compete for a Liguilla place is pretty astounding. They took no wins from their first seven matches and should have been buried and dead. Instead, they took 13 of the next 15 available points, but a loss in their last mach knocked them back again. It took away any margin for error that they may have had and now they need points and lots of them.

Their run has to begin today in the Super Clasico. The last time Chivas took on America was back in October and it went well for the Goats. Erick 'Cubo' Torres, Marco Fabian and Antonio Gallardo each scored in a 3-1 romp over America at the Azteca.

Those were very different Chivas and America teams as the Goats were near the top of the table and their rivals were on their way to missing the Liguilla, but Chivas needs to recreate that October magic anyways. If they don't, their Liguilla dreams will die.
