The Seattle Sounders should be strong favorites at Centurylink Field against more or less any opposition, but Real Salt Lake conducted a smash and grab raid to claim all three points and to end their hosts' winning streak at five. They hardly dominated, the match, but they had the majority of the chances as Seattle's attack failed to breach an organized RSL back line, while the Sounders' attempts to push forward left spaces into which the visitors could surge.
Eddie Johnson had the best chances for the home side but was incredibly wasteful whenever he was presented with a clear sight of Nick Rimando's goal. Seattle continued probing for the entirety of the first half, but they were shocked by an RSL counterattack just after the break, which saw Fabian Espindola collect the ball, pass to Luis Gil and then finish the midfielder's chipped through pass first-time, ending Bryan Meredith's long clean sheet streak.
Sigi Schmid attempted to get his side back into the game with the introduction of Alvaro Fernandez for the ineffectual David Estrada, but the Uruguay international couldn't provide the impetus to break down a solid defensive effort from the visitors, and the final score would remain 1-0 Real Salt Lake.
