Roy Hodgson has skipped the naming of a provisional squad and quickly named a 23-man team for Euro 2012. Rio Ferdinand, Micah Richards and Michael Carrick are the most notable omissions.

While other national team managers are naming provisional squads and making their decisions on a final team after a national team camp or two, new England manager Roy Hodgson has decided to jump right into the job and name a 23-man squad straightaway.

Suspended forward Wayne Rooney makes the squad as expected, as does currently injured midfielder Scott Parker. Rio Ferdinand, Micah Richards and Michael Carrick are among the most high-profile names left out of the team. Midfielders Jack Wilshere and Jack Rodwell were unavailable due to injury, as was defender Kyle Walker. Up top, Andy Carroll's physical presence and promise won out over Grant Holt's form. Here's the entire squad.

Goalkeepers: Robert Green (West Ham), Joe Hart (Man City) John Ruddy (Norwich)

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Man Utd), Joleon Lescott (Man City), John Terry (Chelsea)

Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Man City), Stewart Downing (Liverpool), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Man City), Scott Parker (Tottenham), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Ashley Young (Man Utd)

Forwards: Andy Carroll (Liverpool), Wayne Rooney (Man Utd), Danny Welbeck (Man Utd), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham)

England's first match under Hodgson is a friendly against Norway on May 26. They kick off their Euro 2012 campaign against France on June 11.
