While other national team managers are naming provisional squads and making their decisions on a final team after a national team camp or two, new England manager Roy Hodgson has decided to jump right into the job and name a 23-man squad straightaway.
Suspended forward Wayne Rooney makes the squad as expected, as does currently injured midfielder Scott Parker. Rio Ferdinand, Micah Richards and Michael Carrick are among the most high-profile names left out of the team. Midfielders Jack Wilshere and Jack Rodwell were unavailable due to injury, as was defender Kyle Walker. Up top, Andy Carroll's physical presence and promise won out over Grant Holt's form. Here's the entire squad.
Goalkeepers: Robert Green (West Ham), Joe Hart (Man City) John Ruddy (Norwich)
Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Man City), Stewart Downing (Liverpool), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Man City), Scott Parker (Tottenham), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Ashley Young (Man Utd)
