San Jose Earthquakes Vs. D.C. United, 2012 MLS: Quakes Win 5-3 Shootout

Stay connected with SB Nation

Nobody can stop Chris Wondolowski right now. So the San Jose Earthquakes defense falls apart. Big deal. Wondo will save them. The Quakes striker scored another brace on Wednesday night, pushing his goal total to 10 leading his team to a 5-3 win over D.C. United.

Dwayne De Rosario actually struck first in the match and got D.C. off to a flying start just eight minutes in, but it wouldn't be enough. That's because Steven Lenahrt answered 11 minutes later and two minutes after that, Wondolowski got his first. The Quakes still kept coming, getting a score from Justin Morrow to put them 3-1 up at halftime.

Just after the hour mark, Daniel Woolard scored for D.C. bringing them to within a goal and putting the match back in the balance. It put the pressure on the Quakes, who were hoping to keep their lead atop the Western Conference and when the pressure was on, Wondolowski stepped up. He found his second goal of the game just five minutes after D.C. cut San Jose's lead to one and the home side were back up two.

Lenhart put the capper on things with his second goal of the match, making Hamdi Salihi's 88th minute tally largely insignificant. Once again, the Quakes were winners and their spot atop the conference was safe.
