The San Jose Earthquakes were on cruise control, were being the operative word. They were the hottest team in MLS, atop the MLS table and leading the Vancouver Whitecaps after just 15 minutes. It looked like it would be another easy win for the Quakes, but the Whitecaps equalized. Then four minutes into stoppage time, Vancouver did the unthinkable, getting a goal from Eric Hassli to take down San Jose, 2-1, at BC Place.
Even in a loss, Chris Wondolowski did what looks to be the other thing he knows how to do right now -- score. The striker drifted away from his marker at the far post so when Marvin Chavez cut in and delivered a cross to him, he was free to nod the ball past Joe Cannon for an early San Jose lead.
Vancouver responded well to going behind, creating a few chances and outplaying a San Jos midfield that has been among the best in the league. Their pressure finally paid off just before halftime when Camilo Sanvezzo's free kick found Gershon Koffie at the top of the six-yard box for the equalizer.
The second half evened out some with both sides playing pretty well and creating chances. Both goalkeepers were pretty solid when called upon and it looked like the two teams would split the points, but one mistake by San Jose proved to be costly. In the dying seconds of the match, Ike Opara botched the offside trap held the Hassli onside. That allowed Hassli to beat Jon Busch and deliver an impressive win.
