Argentine Player Lautaro Bugatto Killed in Robbery Crossfire

Stay connected with SB Nation

Sometimes lost in all the hullabaloo about league titles, promotion and relegation are the stories that make us ask, "Why does this happen?"

You've likely never heard of Lautaro Bugatto of the Argentine side Banfield. The defender was on loan with third division side Tristan Suarez and was killed today in a shootout between police and thieves during an attempted robbery, multiple media outlets reported.

Bugatto was in no way involved with the events, apparently, other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The shooting reportedly occurred in the outskirts of Buenos Aires in an area with high crime levels. Gunfire pierced his lung and medical workers were unable to save him.

It's awful enough when anyone dies in this fashion, but even worse with the victim was a 20-year old father of a 2-year-old girl. The defender was a reserve for Banfield in 2009 when they won their first league title and earned a call-up to the Argentina under-20 side that same year.
