There is nothing quite like sorting through scenarios to see who advances from a group and when all four teams are still alive heading into the final matchday. Here are the possibilities for advancement in Group A, as the group prepares for its final matchday in Euro 2012:
Russia advance if: A win or draw will put Russia through to the knockout stages. If they win, they are guaranteed to win the group. But if they draw and the Czech Republic wins, then they will be group runners up. If Russia lose, then they can only advance if the Czech Republic and Poland draw.
Greece advance if: The Greeks will play in the quarterfinals only if they win. If they win and the Czech Republic or Poland win then they will be group runners-up, and if they win and the other match is a draw, then they will win the group.
Poland advance if: A win puts Poland through to the knockout stages without a question, but it is the only way they can advance. If they win and Greece win, Poland will win the group, otherwise they will be group runners-up barring a bizarre situation with Russia not worth discussing.
Czech Republic advance if: If the Czechs win then, they are onto the knockout stages as group winners unless Russia win, in which case they would be runners-up. In the case of a draw, they are through with a Russia win or draw, but if Greece win then the Czech Republic need it to be by six goals to advance.
