Ukraine Vs. England, Euro 2012: Wayne Rooney Goal Puts Three Lions Up

Stay connected with SB Nation

Welcome back, Wayne Rooney. The England striker, who missed the first two matches of Euro 2012 through suspension, has scored to put his country up 1-0 on Ukraine. if this scoreline holds and France finish tied 0-0 with Sweden, England will win Group D and avoid a quarterfinal match-up with Spain.

After Ukraine cleared a corner kick, England got it back and to Steven Gerrard on the right. The captain used a couple stepovers to get just a bit of space from his defender before crossing low to the near post. Danny Welbeck's run there distracted the goalkeeper and allowed it to hit off of his arm and to the back post, where Rooney was waiting to head the ball into the wide open net.

Things are much simpler for England now, who only need a draw to get to the quarterfinals. A win is just a bonus, as it keeps them away from a match with Spain if France don't win and now they look set for that, all that to Rooney. Yes, Rooney is back.
