Portland Timbers defender Hanyer Mosquera punished for punching opponent last Sunday.

Hanyer Mosquera will miss Sunday's game against the Seattle Sounders after the MLS Disciplinary Committee handed down a three-game suspension to the Portland Timbers centerback on Friday. Mosquera was ruled to have hit LA Galaxy forward Jack McBean and the action was deemed "violent conduct, outside the scope of play and endangered McBean’s safety."

In the 4th minute of stoppage time last Sunday, Mosquera was fighting for a ball with McBean as the Galaxy were clinging to a 1-0 lead. A foul was called at the time, but no card was given. Replays show Mosquera clearly hitting McBean in the jaw with what very much looked like a purposeful swing.

Losing Mosquera is surely a blow to the Timbers, who are facing their arch-rivals this weekend in a game that is made doubly important by the fact that they've won just one of their past six games. Mosquera has started 10 games for the Timbers, who have allowed just 10 goals in his starts, while allowing six goals in their three other games.
