Sokratis Papastathopoulos has been sent off in absolutely bizarre fashion for Greece, putting them into a massive hole. It's bad enough that they're down 1-0 in the opening game of Euro 2012, but they're dealing with a central defense crisis as well. Avraam Papadopoulos has already been subbed out for his namesake Kyriakos Papadopoulos due to injury, and now Greece's other central defender is out as well. He's been shown a red card, and Greece are down to ten men.
Carlos Velasco Carballo gave Papastathopoulos a soft yellow card for an inadvertent arm to the head of a Poland player in the 34th minute, then picked up another for a shove on Rafal Marawski, who was already falling down before the Greek defender touched him. It's worth noting that Carballo gave out an incredible 16 red cards in 19 La Liga matches this season. How a referee who gave out that many cards and only refereed that many top flight matches this season was selected to officiate in the Euros, no one will ever know.
