Poland Vs. Greece, Euro 2012: Dimitrios Salpingidis Makes It 1-1

Stay connected with SB Nation

Dimitrios Salpingidis played well for Greece when regular starter Sotiris Ninis was out through injury, but Ninis regained his place in the team and started today's game against Poland. Ninis was largely ineffective in the first half, and even though Greece had a man sent off just before the end of the first half, Fernando Santos made a surprising like-for-like change at halftime, bringing on Salpingidis for Ninis. It's paid off.

With Salpingidis' first touch of the ball, he's equalized for 10-man Greece in the 50th minute. The goal was absolutely gifted to him, thanks to an absolute howler by Wojciech Szczesny. The Arsenal goalkeeper came out and attempted to claim a cross, but mishandled horribly and left the ball on a silver platter for Salpingidis to smash into the back of the net. Greece will now almost certainly pack nine men behind the ball and attempt to preserve a 1-1 draw.
