The Olympics are cool, but MLS is where the drama really is
Everyone is really excited about the Olympics, which is cool, but let's be honest -- the Olympics don't hold a candle to MLS. The Olympics will come around again in four more years, but when is the next time you can watch guys play match number 23 of 34 for a playoff spot that they don't even need to be in the top half of the league to get? Exactly.
Real Salt Lake vs. Vancouver Whitecaps
Friday, 9:00 p.m. ET, MLS Live
The Whitecaps have overhauled their team in the middle of the season and are still closer to first place than they are to missing the playoffs. That totally makes sense.
Pick: Draw, 1-1.
Toronto FC vs. Houston Dynamo
Saturday, 4:30 p.m. ET, MLS Live
Both teams are playing well of late, but no one seems to care. That makes sense for Toronto, who are still bottom of the league, but what about Houston?
Pick: Houston, 2-1.
Montreal Impact vs. New York Red Bulls
Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET, MLS Live
The Red Bulls looked like they had the potential to be the best team in MLS last week and then they added Tim Cahill. He probably will not play this weekend, but it's the Impact so it doesn't matter.
Pick: New York, 3-0.
FC Dallas vs. LA Galaxy
Saturday, 8:00 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network
The first time that Dallas was on national television it was one time too many.
Pick: Draw, 0-0.
Sporting Kansas City vs. Columbus Crew
Saturday, 8:30 p.m. ET, MLS Live
What should we make of Sporting? They should dominate, theoretically, but don't. Are they the worst great team ever? The best pretty good team?
Pick: Kansas City, 2-0.
Colorado Rapids vs. Seattle Sounders
Saturday, 9:00 p.m. ET, MLS Live
The Sounders have just one win in MLS play since May 9. The Rapids are a nice cure for their ills.
Pick: Seattle, 2-0.
San Jose Earthquakes vs. Chicago Fire
Saturday, 10:30 p.m. ET, MLS Live
So many Quakes players made the All-Star team that they will probably be tired and fall behind. Then in true Quakes form, they will stage a late comeback and win. They're the most predictable unpredictable team ever.
Pick: San Jose, 2-1.
Portland Timbers vs. Chivas USA
Saturday, 11:00 p.m. ET, MLS Live
#RelegateTheTimbers
Pick: Chivas, 1-0.
Philadelphia Union vs. New England Revolution
Sunday, 7:00 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network
We'll call this the Irrelevance Cup and no amount of Revs winning can change that.
Pick: Draw, 1-1.
