Mexico were disappointing in their Olympics opener, a 0-0 draw with South Korea, but they're in the driver's seat in Group B after their 2-0 win over Gabon on Sunday. Gabon drew Switzerland in their first match and would have been in a good position to reach the quarterfinals with another draw, but their defense fell apart late.
Senior team regular Giovani dos Santos started the match on the bench once again, and came into the game at halftime in an attempt to liven things up. He made the difference for El Tri with two goals, including one gorgeous left-footed finish from open play in the 63rd minute.
A desperate Gabon team lost their composure in the closing minutes, with Henri Ndong giving away a penalty in stoppage time. The foul on Oribe Peralta was also good for his second yellow card of the match. Dos Santos stepped up and converted the penalty, sealing the win for Mexico.
