Senegal Vs. Uruguay, 2012 London Olympics: Final Score 2-0, Uruguay Stunned

Uruguay suffered a shock 2-0 defeat against Senegal despite having a man advantage for a full hour. With a potent front line of Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani and Gaston Ramirez, many were expecting Uruguay to be the team to beat in Group A (which also features Great Britain), and they could have advanced with a win against Senegal on Sunday. Instead, a Moussa Konate brace was followed by a long, long spell of attacking futility, throwing the group wide open.

Konate broke the deadlock in the tenth minute, putting home the rebound after the unfortunate Martin Campana had saved superbly from Cheikhou Kouyate, and he made it 2-0 before the stroke of half time, nodding home a corner. In between was plenty of action, with Abdoulaye Ba shown a yellow card and then a straight red for two fouls on Luis Suarez within four minutes, Edinson Cavani seeing a shot spectacularly tipped away by Ousame Meme and Gaston Ramirez both hitting the crossbar then pulling off an appalling close-range miss.

The second half wasn't nearly as exciting -- ten-man Senegal were more than happy to sit back and let Uruguay try to break them down. The favourites simply couldn't do it, with Suarez missing their two best chances. Why they left Cavani on the flanks while they swung in crosses to the Liverpool man is a bit of a mystery, and it may well have cost them here. Uruguay's prospects of coming out of the group now seem to hang on beating hosts Great Britain in their next match.
