The Swiss international joins on a three year contract.

Schalke 04 have announced the signing of Tranquillo Barnetta on a free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen. The midfielder has signed through June 2015. He will wear the number 27 shirt.

"We're delighted Tranquillo has elected to join us. He has great quality and is very versatile, as he has shown for both Leverkusen and Switzerland," sporting director Horst Heldt said. "We were also able to get him on a free transfer."

Barnetta, 27, was with Leverkusen since the 2004-05 season including one season-long loan to Hannover 96. He has made 194 Bundesliga appearances scoring 25 goals and assisting on 41. The Switzerland international has made 61 appearances for his country and scored 8 goals. He's been brilliant at times including a three assist performance against Germany in a pre-Euro 2012 friendly.

This is Schalke's third signing of the season after Chinedu Obasi and Roman Neustädter. Barnetta will join Schalke's ever-improving attacking midfield of Obasi, Jose Jurado, Julian Draxler, and Jefferson Farfan.
