David Beckham was suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount on Thursday for what the MLS Disciplinary Committee deemed "confrontational and provocative behavior" during and after the LA Galaxy's game last Saturday against the San Jose Earthquakes. The disciplinary committee does not detail which of Beckham's actions actually resulted in the suspension, but during the game he kicked a ball at a player and the referee and after the game he charged the referee.
Although the Galaxy played a match between now and Saturday, Beckham did not play in it as he was already serving a suspension because of yellow-card accumulation, which he picked up after the ball-kicking incident.
The punishment does come off as a bit light, though, as earlier this year Brek Shea was suspended three games for kicking a ball at a referee and last year Rafael Marquez was suspended three games for throwing a ball at a player.
The Disciplinary Committee also fined Galaxy coach Bruce Arena and Impact coach Jesse Marsch for criticizing referees.
