Mexico finally brought senior team starter Giovani dos Santos off their bench and put him into the starting XI for their final group stage match against Switzerland. The decision paid off, with the Tottenham Hotspur man looking lively throughout. He set up the only goal of the match, helping Mexico to a 1-0 victory that secured their first place standing in Group B.
Switzerland had to play the match without Michel Morganella, who was sent home for sending out tweets that were racist against Koreans. Mexico didn't exactly seen sympathetic of the fact that their opponents had lost their right back, and were very much a left-leaning team throughout the match.
Neither team had much quality in midfield, which made for a bit of a dull game until things sprang to life in the 69th minute. Dos Santos, just about the only player who had looked lively and competent going forward during the match set up his center forward Oribe Peralta for the game-winner. Switzerland picked up the pace afterwards, but struggled to challenge Jesus Corona. The Mexican center of defense had an excellent game, and was able to help El Tri hang on to a shutout win.
