The rumours swirling around now-former Vitesse Arnhem left back Alexander Buttner turn out to be entirely true. It's now been confirmed that the defender is heading to Old Trafford, having joined Manchester United in a deal believed by the Guardian to be worth no more than £4M.
It's an interesting move from Sir Alex Ferguson and United -- Buttner's 23 years old and yet to really break out as a top-class defender in the Eredivisie, leaving many to question whether he ever will. However, he's certainly a solid enough player right now, and since the main motivation for acquiring him is to back up captain Patrice Evra, a 'solid' player with some untapped potential seems like a pretty good bet.
Don't expect to see too much of him in the Premier League unless Evra goes down with an injury or something though. The League Cup seems like a better sort of bet.
