Chicago Fire Agree To Immediately Transfer Marco Pappa To Heerenveen

The transfer of Marco Pappa to Eredivise side SC Heerenveen has been official for about two weeks, but on Thursday it was announced that the midfielder will leave immediately, rather than wait until the end of the season after the Chicago Fire agreed to accept a fee. The amount was not announced.

"This was a very difficult decision to make, however, we feel it is the best move for the club and the player at this time," Fire President of Soccer Operations Javier Leon said in a team release. "This transfer provides the club with flexibility under the salary cap and made sense as we look toward the future. Marco came into his own as a member of the Fire, he has been a big part of the club and we wish him the best in this next phase of his career."

The Fire are in the middle of a playoff push that they hope will end their two-year drought. The 24-year-old Guatemalan had been enjoying a solid season, scoring six goals to go along with five assists. He had also started three of the Fire's past four games and 20 of 25 games this season.

Pappa will join a Heerenveen team that finished fifth in the Eredivisie last season and qualified for this season's Europa League.
