Chelsea Vs. Atletico Madrid, 2012 UEFA Super Cup: A Slight Scheduling Oversight

Chelsea and Atletico Madrid are playing a glorified friendly on deadline day for reasons no one can ascertain.

Much to the displeasure of football fans (and writers!) everywhere, UEFA couldn't find a day other than transfer deadline day to schedule the European Super Cup. Reigning UEFA Champions League title holders Chelsea take on UEFA Europa League winners Atletico Madrid at Stade Louis in Monaco, and you'll probably decide to listen to Jim White scream at you instead of watching the game.

Both teams have players in Monaco that might not be members of their clubs by the time the game kicks off, like Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge. It would also be hilarious if, however unlikely it may be, Chelsea bought Radamel Falcao at the deadline.

Expect the Europa League side to take the match a bit more seriously, as usual. Atleti are coming off a 4-0 mauling of Athletic Bilbao and should come into this match with their confidence high. The Blues should play a first team, though, and will be looking at the game as more than a glorified friendly, but not quite a competitive fixture. Sort of like the Community Shield, except hopefully with less of Branislav Ivanovic putting his studs into someone's shin.

Game Date/Time: Friday, 2:45 p.m. ET, 8:45 p.m. local

Venue: Stade Louis, Monaco

TV: FOX Soccer Channel (U.S.), Sportsnet (Canada), Sky Sports 2 (U.K.)
