The anticipation for the U.S. Open Cup final will just have to continue to build, because the start of the match has been delayed to 9:41 p.m. ET thanks to Mother Nature. The Kansas City area is getting pounded with rain right now and, while that cannot and will not delay the match, the accompanying lightning has pushed back the starting time.
Right now, 9:41 p.m. ET is just the start time they are eying. With any more lightning, the time will have to be pushed back even more. The goalkeepers are out on the field warming up now, so they are in the clear at the moment, but there is no telling when lightning could return.
The forecast called for rain and possible lightning in the area, so the delay, while unfortunate, isn't completely surprising. How it affects the crowd is up in the air. It could drive some people away or it could build the excitement in the stadium and give them a chance to get drunker, which will only get the crowd rowdier.
With Sporting set to play without Bobby Convey and Aurelien Collin, as well as a handful of players on the team who are playing injured, they could really really use the help of the crowd.
