Augsburg and Wolfsburg played a scoreless draw in the Bundesliga's showcase match on Friday evening. With neither side able to generate much in the attacking third, the match was mostly a midfield battle and not very entertaining to the neutral.
Aristide Bance caused problems for the Wolfsburg backline early and often as the match got underway. He lined up one shot, but Emanuel Pogatetz was there to deflect it over the head of goalkeeper Diego Benaglio. The ball went just over the ball landing on the roof of the net.
Wolfsburg's first chance of the match fell to Deigo in the 17th minute. The Brazilian midfielder forced a quick reaction save out of Mohamed Amsif. The chance came from a counter as Wolfsburg sat back early and absorbed the Augsburg attack.
The remainder of the half would play out with neither side generating a serious threat to the opposing goal. One positive for Wolfsburg is that Diego was far more involved in the attack than he has been in recent weeks. His passes were crisper, and his movement was improved.
Augsburg's first chance of the second half came in the 62nd minute when Ricardo Rodriguez pulled down Milan Petrzela drawing a yellow card. The resulting free kick went directly into the wall, and they cleared the ball.
With twenty five minutes remaining in the match, Bas Dost came on for Vieirinha. Thomas Kahlenberg moved forward more often with Dost's arrival. Wolfsburg pressed the attack and started to see more and more of the ball. Augsburg countered well and managed to draw a few corners to no avail.
The players kicked the ball around aimlessly for the final ten minutes with neither side threatening. The referee mercifully blew the final whistle. The point is the first for Augsburg this season and helps them get some positive momentum going forward. For Wolfsburg, the clean sheet is welcome after their last match when they were shellacked 4-0 by Hannover.
