GETAFE, SPAIN - SEPTEMBER 15: Carles Puyol of FC Barcelona controls the ball during the La Liga match between Getafe CF and FC Barcelona at Coliseum Alfonso Perez on September 15, 2012 in Getafe, Spain.

Barca captain Carles Puyol has suffered a knee ligament injury which will keep him out for several weeks.

Barcelona captain Carles Puyol will miss between four and six weeks of action after he suffered a knee ligament injury during last night's 4-1 victory over Getafe.

Puyol left the field at Coliseum Alfonso Perez shortly after the second half began, but his injury did not at first appear serious as he returned to watch the game with an ice-pack.

He is expected to have further tests to determine the exact length of his lay-off, but it appears that the Blaugrana captain will be absent for several weeks at least. Fortunately for Barcelona, they are in an ideal position to cope without him, being an astonishing 8 points clear in the league after getting off to a fantastic start under new boss Tito Vilanova.

The good news is that the injury is not a repeat of the one that had kept him out of the Euro 2012 Championships in Poland and Ukraine, for which he underwent surgery.
