Udinese 1-1 Anzhi Makhachkala
Anzhi took the lead thanks to a Daniele Padelli own goal and appeared to be on the way to a victory before second half sub Antonio Di Natale saved a point for Udinese in the 94th minute. Anzhi's keeper Evgeny Pomazan saved the initial shot from Giampiero Pinzi but Di Natale was in the right place and the right time and put home the rebound.
Young Boys 3-5 Liverpool
In what was probably the most entertaining match of the day, Liverpool held off a spirited challenge from Young Boys before pulling away late for the three points. Both sides traded goals and the lead a couple time before Liverpool finally pulled away late thanks to a brace by Jonjo Shelvey.
Hapoel Tel-Aviv 0-3 Atletico Madrid
The defending champions rolled to a easy victory over Hapoel Tel-Aviv despite missing prolific goal scorer Radamel Falcao. In his absence, Cristian Rodriguez, Costa Diego and Raul Garcia all scored for Atletico.
Viktoria Plzen 3-1 Academica de Coimbra
Academica's first foray in to European football in 40 years was not a moment to remember. Despite taking an early lead thanks to a Eduardo Da Costa Wilson goal, they simply couldn't stand up to Plzen. Frantisek Rajtoral, Michal Duris and Pavel Horvath did the damage for Plzen.
AEL 0-0 Borussia Monchengladbach
Monchengladbach were held to a scoreless draw thanks to an excellent performance by AEL keeper Matias Degra. Despite making several great saves, it look like Monchengladbach would still get the result after being awarded an penalty in the 98th minute. Oscar Wednt stepped up for the German side and sent his attempt straight off the crossbar.
Fenerbahce 2-2 Marseille
Joey Barton's debut with Marseille saw his new team fight back from a two-goal deficit to earn an away draw. Alex and Caner Erkin staked Fenerbache to a 2-0 lead, but they couldn't hold off the French side. Mathieu Valbuena scored in the 83rd minute and Andre Ayew got the equalizer in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Bordeaux 4-0 Club Brugge
Bordeaux hammered Brugge to get their Europa League run off to a dream start. Ludovic Sane, Yoan Gouffran, Ferreira Vieira Jussie all scored and Bjorn Engels compounded Brugge's misery with an own goal.
Martimo 0-0 Newcastle United
Despite several good chance, Newcastle was unable to break through against Martimo having to settle for a draw. Shola Ameobi and Don Gosling both came close for the Magpies, but it simply wasn't to be.
FC Copenhagen 2-1 Molde
Andreas Cornelius's 74th minute goal was the match winner for Copenhagen as they held on to defeat Molde. Claudemir had the other goal for the Dutch side and Pape Pate Diouf scored for Molde who are managed by former Manchester United star Ole Gunnar Soskjaer.
VfB Stuttgart 2-2 Steaua Bucuresti
Stuttgart's Vedad Ibisevic and Steaua's Alexsandru Chipciu scored two minutes apart early in the first half, but late goals decided the match. It looked as if Raul Rusescu's 80th minute penalty would allow Steaua to steal the points, but Georg Miedermaier scored five minutes later to rescue a draw for Stuttgart.
Dnipro 2-0 PSV Eindhoven
Dnipro got off to a winning start at home, rolling past Eindhoven thanks to a goal from Nascimento Leite Matheus and an own goal from Atiba Hutchinson.
Napoli 4-0 AIK
Racing Genk 3-0 Videoton FC Fehervar
Goals from Jelle Vossen, Thomas Buffel and Benjamin De Cuelaer led Genk to an easy win over Videoton.
Sporting Lisbon 0-0 FC Basel
Despite playing the final 39+ minutes with a man advantage, FC Basel had to settle for a scoreless draw against Sporting. Sporting defender Xandao was shown a straight red for a bad foul in the 51st minute.
Internazionale 2-2 FK Rubin Kazan
Rubin Kazan conceded a stoppage time goal and were forced to settle for a draw against Inter. Alexander Ryazantsev scored early and Jose Salomon Rondon put Kazan ahead in the 84th minute. Inter answered via Yuto Nagatoma in the 92nd minute to escape with a point. Marki Livaja had the other goal from Inter.
Partizan Belgrade 0-0 Neftchi
Despite a massive advantage in the shot column, Partizan Belgrade simply couldn't break through the Neftchi defense and had to settle for a scoreless draw.
Athletic Bilbao 1-1 Hapoel Kiryat Shmona
Two first goals, one from Hapoel's Adrian Rochet and another from Bilbao's Markel Susaeta were all the scoring as the two teams both took a point from their group stage opener.
Lyon 2-1 Sparta Prague
Bafetimbi Gomis and Lisandro Lopez staked Lyon to a 2-0 lead and they held on for a 2-1 win, despite a late goal from Sparta's Ladislav Krejci.
NK Maribor 3-0 Panathinaikos
Marcos Tavares, Agim Ibraimi and Robert Beric all scored for Maribor as the Portugese side hammered Panathinaikos.
Tottenham 0-0 Lazio
Spurs scored twice but were thwarted in each case by dubious calls from the officiating staff. Clint Dempsey was clearly onside on his disallowed goal anGoals from Tarik Elyounossi and Mikael Dorsin led Rosenborg past Rapid Vienna in Austria. Markus Katzer scored late for Vienna but they were unable to complete the comeback.d Steven Caulker's second half header was disallowed for a phantom foul. Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 FC Metalist Kharkiv
Leverkusen dominated play and peppered Metalist's goal with shot, but Oleksandr Goryainov and his defense held firm allowing Metalist to escape with a point.
Rapid Vienna 1-2 Rosenborg
Goals from Tarik Elyounossi and Mikael Dorsin led Rosenborg to key road victory over Rapid Vienna. Markus Katzer scored for the home side late but they were unable to finish the comeback.

Levante's Garcia Juanfran goal in the 40th minute was all the Spanish side needed for a 1-0 home victory over Helsinborg.

After taking a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Nacer Chadli and Willem Janssen, Twente looked on their way to an easy victory. Hannover fought back though getting a goal in the 68th minute from Artur Sobiech and equalized thanks to an own goal by Peter Wisgerhof four minutes later.
