Despite a fantastic performance by Romelu Lukaku and plenty of chances in front of goal for the Baggies, they were undone by a couple of brilliant Fulham attacks on New Year's Day. Dimitar Berbatov and Alex Kacaniklic were the scorers for the visitors, with the latter netting a goal following a brilliant West Bromwich Albion attack to completely flip the script and guide his side to a 2-1 victory.
The first half saw Fulham start strong and control the game early, before West Brom gained a foothold around the 20 minute mark. However, they were taken apart on the counter by Ashkan Dejagah and Berbatov just before the break. The absence of central defender Jonas Olsson was felt when Dehagah found Berbatov on the edge of the box with a square ball, and Berbatov finished brilliantly.
Lukaku, who had a few half-chances in the first half, finished off West Brom's best move in the 49th minute when he touched in a cross from Billy Jones. There was a hint of offside, but Lukaku looked to stay level with his teammate. That sparked West Brom to life and they proceeded to dominate up until Fulham's goal.
West Brom had three consecutive incredible chances in the 57th minute. Lukaku had an effort saved by David Stockdale, Zoltan Gera smacked his attempt off the post on the rebound, and Chris Brunt's third attempt at goal was blocked on the line by Aaron Hughes. Two minutes later, Fulham hit on the counter again, with Kacaniklic bringing down a ball from Bryan Ruiz and finishing past Ben Foster.
The hosts battered the Fulham goal for the remainder of the match, but never found the net again as the Cottagers held on for a vital win.
