Rayo Vallecano won their fourth straight league match at the expense of Atheltic Bilbao who are having a nightmare season
Rayo Vallecano's excellent run of form continued today with a 2-1 away victory over Athletic Bilbao. Alhassane Bangoura and Francisco Medina did the damage for Rayo as Bilbao are getting closer and closer to the relegation battle.
Bangoura put Rayo in front three minutes in to the second half, taking a pass from Robert Trashorras and beating Gorka Iraizoz with a quick shot.
Rayo extended their lead in the 65th minute after Athletic's Carlos Gurpegi brought down Alejandro Domínguez in the box, earning a penalty for the visitors. Piti stepped up and buried his PK, putting Rayo ahead 2-0.
Mikel San Jose pulled a goal back for Athletic in the 77th, but Fernando Llorente inexplicably missed a point blank header late in the match that would have allowed Los Leones to salvage a point.
Rayo move up to 6th place in the league, only one point out of a Champions League spot. It's a remarkable position for a team that was expected to struggle after selling their best player (Michu) in the summer.
